Integrating EQUAL SciTech Tools into MOOC Modules

Introduction to Gender Issues in STEM e No

In order to further explore and clarify the issues addressed, we suggest carefully reading the EqualSciteh Approach Guide, which contains a theoretical reflection on this subject, the results of surveys conducted in the four countries of the consortium, and how these issues are addressed in schools in each partner country.

To foster an equitable and inclusive environment in the classroom, teachers can use the educational tools created by the project, in this specific case presenting the video festival that introduces students to charismatic and very important women in various STEM fields. In this way, they break down some of the barriers that exist in the classroom regarding the real impact and importance of women in this area.

Identifying Barriers and Challenges

Role of Teachers as Change Agents

Teachers can use the various educational tools produced by the project to promote change. They should consult the guides developed for the use of the various educational tools and adapt their choice to their classes. We suggest that classes watch the video festival, selecting some of the charismatic women from various countries and different STEM fields. Another initiative could be to implement the card game, using the guide that describes the possible ways to play. They can also use the digital book with augmented reality, a tool that allows students to interact with some of the notable women in this field.

Effective Communication and Engagement

In order for teachers to create a safe environment, free from stereotypes, where girls are encouraged to pursue their dreams regardless of their gender, they can use the various educational tools produced by the project. They should consult the guides prepared for the use of the various teaching tools and adapt their choice to the classes they have. We suggest that classes watch the video festival, selecting some of the charismatic women from various countries and different STEM fields. Another initiative could be to implement the card game, using the guide that describes the possible ways to play. After using these tools, you can promote a debate among young people focused on creating and promoting a safe and equitable environment. You should also use the digital book with augmented reality, as this tool allows students to interact with some of the notable women in this field, which is an added bonus.

Developing Gender-Inclusive Curriculum

When developing lesson plans aimed at developing a gender-inclusive curriculum, teachers and educators can include the various educational tools produced. When starting to teach one of the STEM subjects, classes can watch the video festival, selecting some of the notable women from the various STEM fields. Another initiative could be to implement the card game, using the guide that describes how to play. They can also use the augmented reality digital book, a tool that allows students to interact with some of the notable women in this field. In this way, students will deconstruct stereotypes and broaden their knowledge about the real projection and impact of various women in STEM fields.

Monitoring and Evaluating Progress

In order to monitor and assess students’ progress in this area, teachers can implement a questionnaire at the end of using the pedagogical tools created by the project. This allows them to understand the relevance of each tool and obtain feedback on the implementation of the activity.

Collaborative Approaches to Gender Equality

The implementation of the pedagogical tools produced by the project translates into the creation of a safe environment promoting a culture of inclusion. Teachers should promote training activities where they share how to use the educational tools with their peers, parents, and educational policy makers, contributing to inclusive education. In this way, they demonstrate the relevance of these tools and how we can contribute to deconstructing existing stereotypes.

Long-Term Strategies for Sustainable Gender Equality

Given that any program or intervention strategies are only successful if they are applied systematically and repeatedly, it is necessary to effectively include these tools in school curricula and daily routines as part of a structured plan, integrated into the regular practices of various subjects. We suggest implementing these tools at various levels of education, adapting them to the age of the students. To do this, you can use the guide for using the cooperative card game and the video festival, choosing some of the STEM women. They should also be disseminated in teacher training so that they can reach a large number of professionals and have an effective impact in schools. In this way, the teaching tools will be disseminated and used by a significant number of teachers and students, which, in our opinion, will have positive repercussions on gender issues in the medium and long term, promoting the implementation of good practices.
